Electrocompaniet EC4.8MkII - reference preamplifier

I have been an Electrocompaniet fan from the moment I first heard them some 10 years ago. This purchase was to replace the ECI 5 Mk II. As always the packaging brings confidence that everything inside the box is safe. There is the pre-amp, a remote and the instructions. Electrocompaniet instructions are ok, but I always feel they could be clearer - maybe something is lost in translation. The preamp is a big, solid piece of kit, beautifully made, solid and, to my eyes at least, looks really classy with the solid perspex front and styling. The inputs and outputs are great - two sets of balanced inputs! The sound when connected to the Electrocompaniet AW250 R stereo power amplifier and heard through PMC Twentyfive-24s was breathtakingly fantastic. I have a number of "test discs” - favourite CDs/SACDs that I know well. My CD/SACD player is an Electrocompaniet EMP3 Disc player. Not only did I love the quality of the sound, but I heard things jump out that I had not heard before, really a mark of a step up in transparency and detail. I lived in Liverpool, England for over 15 years and became used to the nuanced Liverpudlian accent that revealed which suburb someone was from. When listening to the Beatles, I heard those same accents telling me which part of Liverpool each of the “Fab Four” were from. I had heard this before, but this combination of hifi really brought out the subtle differences between the four members and their roots. I cannot fault the presentation of the music be it Heavy rock, Jazz or Classical. Some recordings of piano are sublime. Dream hifi equipment…….not quite! My only gripe is the naming by Electrocompaniet of the various channels. We have AN1 (Analogue 1) and AN2 etc. They are not next to each other on the remote. AN1 is labelled on the remote as DVD and AN2 as CD. Tuner is AN4 and Tape???? (remember those?) as AN3. Then there is an assortment of AN5s including, VCR AUX and HT. SACD takes you back to AN1 but is not labelled as AN1! Call me old fashioned (guilty), but really what is wrong with CD, Tuner, Phono etc? The Preamp appears to have digital switching (it lowers the volume and then raises it again when you select the next input), why not have this as a user defined labelling rather than confusing and problematic AN1, 2 and so on? I realise this a generic remote for for all of Electrocompaniet’s gear, but really, to have AN1 staring at me from the preamp when I am playing a CD is grating. In summary… This is an awesome piece of kit that everyone should listen to and own. Ignore the impenetrable labelling of inputs!
